Video Graphic Novel Review | March, by Rep John Lewis

Did you read that right? A video? I did something a little differently this time– I made a video review of March (Book One), just to see if I really could do it. I was curious whether the BookTube (?) format would be better for the graphic novels I review. I’d done a lot of video editing and whatnot in high school, and a little bit in college, but I’d be lying if I said this stuff was still familiar to me.

Moral of the story:

1) I’m a writer, not a talker.

2) I speak far too slowly.

3) I should make sure I’m in focus before I finish the bulk of the filming. I swear I was in focus the first session of filming. Then I scrapped it, and decided that I would work with this footage instead. It was a trial.

Hopefully you all enjoy it, despite its flaws!

I gave this March (Book One) 4.5 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed it, and thought it did a great job setting up Rep. Lewis’ inspiration for being a part of the civil rights movement. I walked away from this first book with a much greater understanding of his background, and how that provided the impetus for his activism.

  1. […] March: Book One, by Representative John Lewis, et al.: Alright, this one isn’t as much of a stretch. March is topical in a way the other books on this list are not. It’s timely and relevant as we get to the end of President Obama’s presidency, and as we consider the status of American politics as a whole. But to read this history as a graphic novel? As someone who may read one or two graphic novels a YEAR, March is a book that is completely out of my comfort zone. […]

  3. I think you did a great job! I’m really interested in reading this book. I need to get into reading more. How do people read, write and work a full time job?? I wish I could just quit my job so I could read and write all day!!

    1. Thanks so much! For me, its easier because my old job was a really long commute on public transportation. Perfect time to read! But now that my contract at my old job is over, I find my day is even MORE consumed by job applications! Its really hard sometimes to find reading and writing time, but it’s becoming part of my “self care” routine, and therefore a mandatory thing for me to decompress.

      1. Well I have been getting up early to journal but I also started at the gym last week so that eats up some time too. And then I’m kind of social so I’m getting invites sucking up my weekend… I just need a couple of snow days or to win this powerball…

      2. See… You win because I’m awful at regularly working out and reading. And I cant listen to audiobooks while I work out, either.

      1. You shouldn’t be! The review was great – you didn’t get tongue-twisted once, which is impressive. I hope to see more video reviews 🙂

Loved the video review! This sounds like a very interesting book that I may pick up. I have recently been getting into graphic novels and I’ve been keeping an eye out for some good one’s. I think I will add this one to my list! Great review!

I recently just finished the graphic novel version of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children that I’m hoping to review soon. It was really good and helped renew the story in my mind as it’s been a while since I read the novel. There’s also another one called ‘Nimona’ that I’ve heard is really good and am hoping to get my hands on soon.
