I have so many freshly-purchased books on my shelf, there’s really just not enough time to get through everything! However, these three new-ish releases are a must for my winter reading. What new books are you excited to get your hands on?
1.) Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person, by Shonda Rhimes
I’ll admit that the ‘self-help’ genre isn’t really for me. Most of the time, I consider them preachy, and the remainder of them simply don’t appeal to me. However, as a rabid Scandal fan, and Shonda-stan, I can’t help but be excited for anything she touches. Everyone I’ve heard from has loved the concept of the book, which is heartening. At the very least, I could stand to say yes to more things in my life. Especially if it gets me where it seems to have gotten Shonda Rhimes.

2.) I’ll Never Write My Memoirs, by Grace Jones and Peter Morley
On my list of least read genres, autobiographical works are right behind self-help books. But if anyone is bound to have had some crazy moments in her life, it’s Grace Jones– model, actress, and singer (in that order). People have already pulled some wild quotes from the book (who talks a robber into letting them go, but not their boyfriend? Grace Jones), stirring up even more interest. She also criticizes some contemporary celebrities for copying her style, saying that people like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj borrow from her aesthetic– even if they aren’t aware of it, their fashion crews certainly are. She’s got a point, and I’m eager to read more from a woman who spent her prime years hanging with greats like Andy Warhol and others. She’s an unsinkable spirit who knows her worth, and the degree to which she’s influenced modern pop culture.

3.) A Little Life, Hanya Yanagihara
Admittedly, the cover initially put me off, but this book is much more my speed than the previous two.. It’s not as new as the others, but I still haven’t taken the plunge. What’s holding me back? I’m not sure if I’ll ready to tackle all 700 (!!) pages of this book my winter vacation. Once December 18th comes, hopefully I’ll be ready for this emotional and intense character study. From what I’ve heard, every possible “trigger warning” applies to this book, so I’ll take my time with it.
